Our Mission
The Gary Freedom School is a place where students are educated to become powerful, community-focused leaders and agents of social change through
student-centered teaching.
Brief Gary Freedom School History
The Gary Freedom School is happy to join the short list of independent freedom schools in this country. Highly Flavored, Inc. has successfully run two Social Justice Youth Leadership Summer Programs. Since the summer of 2008, students have learned the importance of how social justice problems (both in the city of Gary and globally) impact the growth of their immediate communities. The Gary Freedom School is a natural progression to the next level of this program.
GFS Announcements
The 2011 Freedom Summer program will officially end on August 13, 2011. Gary Freedom School students will then get busy implementing their Grassroots projects within Northwest Indiana. Check back to see the progress of their projects. Go here to see pictures from this summer's program.
The Gary Freedom School just ended a first year partnership with the Barden Gary Foundation and Educational Talent Search (TRIO) of Ivy Tech Community College Northwest. A total of 21 high school seniors implemented "ground up" projects within the Gary community, servicing over 325 residents. Students presented their projects to the community in a Student Showcase on March 25, 2011 at Indiana University Northwest. Go here to see some video footage from the showcase.
